Himarë: Land of Legends

Beyond the turquoise waters and golden sun, Himarë is a land of ancient legends and strategic fortresses. From the era of the Epirotes to the mysteries of the Cold War, every stone here tells a story.

1 Himarë Castle & The Old Village (Kastro)

Perched high on a hill overlooking the modern town, the Castle of Himarë has been inhabited for over 3,500 years.

What to see

Walk through the narrow stone alleys of the old village. You’ll find the ruins of ancient Illyrian walls at the base, topped by Byzantine and Ottoman architecture.

The Highlight

The Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus, a beautiful example of local religious heritage.

✨ Pro Tip: Visit at sunset. The view of the Ionian Sea from the castle walls is the best in the region.

2 Ali Pasha Castle (Porto Palermo)

Located in the heart of the beautiful Porto Palermo Bay, this triangular fortress is one of the most iconic landmarks in Albania.

The Legend

While often attributed to the powerful Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the early 19th century, some historians believe the foundations may be even older, built by the Venetians.

The Experience

Explore the dark, cool stone corridors and climb to the roof for a 360-degree view of the bay. It is one of the best-preserved castles in the country.

3 The Pirate’s Cave (Shpella e Piratëve)

Just north of Himarë, near Gjipe, lies a cave steeped in local folklore.

The Story

According to legend, this massive sea cave was a sanctuary for medieval pirates who used it to hide their ships and treasures from passing galleons.

The Literature

It was made famous by the Albanian author Petro Marko in his book Shpella e Piratëve.

Access

This site is best visited by boat, allowing you to swim inside the same cavern where legends were born.

4 Grama Bay: The Ancient Sailors' Ledger

Hidden within the rugged Karaburun Peninsula, Grama Bay is a "history book made of stone."

The Inscriptions

For centuries, sailors, pirates, and soldiers took shelter here from storms. They carved their names and prayers into the rock walls—some dating back to Classical Antiquity.

History

You can find inscriptions dedicated to the Dioscuri (protectors of sailors) and names of high-ranking Roman and Byzantine figures.

5 The Cold War Submarine Tunnel

A more modern but equally fascinating piece of history is the massive Porto Palermo Submarine Base.

The Site

Built during the communist era under Enver Hoxha, this giant tunnel was designed to hide and protect submarines.

The Vibe

Seeing this "James Bond-style" fortress from the water is a haunting reminder of Albania’s isolated past and its strategic importance during the 20th century.
